8 Friends-Approved Spring Bags

Written by Andreea-Marilena Dudas, Creative Director and Founder of Maison Coucou
There’s a certain romance to swinging a bag from boutique to bistro on a sunny day. Now that our social calendars are starting to fill up again, we’re in the market for bags to bring out with us, from the fun to the functional. We asked eight of my friends to share what they’re carrying and why.
1. Caterina - Italia

“One of these days, I’ll make good on my promise to invest in an all-purpose, goes-with-everything tote. Today is not that day. I’m a sucker for the bamboo handle and almost conical bucket shape on this guy, and the creamy color ticks the box on versatility.”

3. Fennou - Spain
“I know what you’re thinking: What can you even fit in that tiny bag? The answer is: all the necessities! You may not be able to throw your laptop in there, but it can hold your phone, credit cards, keys, and lip balm. It’s prime for a night out, whether it’s dinner or a black-tie event (I took mine to a wedding and got so many compliments).”

4. Marie-Louise, Belgium
“I love baskets. I bring my Julia handbag to the market every week. I use little woven ones as planter covers. Once, in my wannabe French-girl phase, I bought a wicker basket à la Jane Birkin off Etsy. Predictably, I’m very into this elevated leather version.”

5. Charlotte, Belgium
“True story: On the way to the first very long flight of my life, I stopped to buy a tote small enough to fit my lip balm and smartphone. So I appreciate the size of this Orange Murphy tote. The shape makes it feel elegant. And the interior is necessary for avoiding chaos. It’s also a safe place for my other prized possession, hand cream bought by Nathalie Baeten (Daphnis & Chloé).”

6. Justine, Belgium
“I’m a huge fan of chain-strap bags because the touch of sparkle doubles as jewelry. This one has a cute cloud shape that feels of-the-moment while still being versatile: It works just as well with an LBD as it does with an oversize blazer, jeans, and trusty white sneakers.”

7. Eleonore, Portugal
“I’m always looking for a bag that I can take straight from work to dinner during a busy day. The neutral tone goes with just about any outfit for any occasion, and the geometric pattern has just the right amount of intrigue to make this bag pop.

8. Alessia, Belgium
“I am a strong believer in springtime after-work drinks, so I love a tote that can transition from sparkling lights to full sunshine. This Maison Coucou bag is big enough to fit my wallet, but not so roomy that my sunglasses mysteriously go missing seconds after I put them away.
